ANIMAX ANI-MATE IN FOCUS: Katrina Langomez.  Katrina is one of those which can be said as a veteran cospalyer with lots of colorful experiences in the community.  She started cosplaying December 2006 during the second Hataw Hanep Hero Convention. During this event she cosplayed Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist.

"I even learned to snap with both fingers just for cosplay," Katrina recalled.

In her span of 6 years in cosplaying she did have a few hiatuses here and there for real life reasons like school but never did she ever think of bidding farewell to her favorite hobby and she said not in the immediate foreseeable future.

"Lately I've been pacing my cosplay so that I can really focus into going in detail with them," she said.

It was really an awe to see cosplayers which had been so keen in cosplaying and then I asked her what inspired her to cosplay.  She said that she had been going to conventions since 2005 and she always admired the cosplayers she saw in conventions.

"When you have your favorite characters come to life in front of you it's just like magic. Apart from that I noticed they seemed to be having a really great time like doing conga lines after conventions and other silly things.  So I decided that i'd do my best to embody each character I cosplay because it's a great feeling when people tell you, "You really are like that character."," Katrina added.

She also said that she had lived within herself the "play" [part in cosplay which she says is an an overlooked aspect so whenever she cosplays she really do take time to know her character and study their mannerisms in order to pull it off well.

Here are some more questions which we asked her during our ANIMAX ANI-MATE IN FOCUS: Katrina Langomez:

I cosplay because it's a fun hobby and a really versatile visual art form. Apart from going  to conventions and joining competitions, you can also use other creative mediums like photography or video. I love the arts and whether it be singing, dancing, illustrating, graphic design, craft-making, photography, or video I can use my skills as a multimedia artist to create outputs which will do justice to the characters I cosplay.
There's also the social aspect to cosplaying that I love. You end up meeting lots of different people and you can really find great friends in the community. That and I found cosplay was a great way to boost your self esteem. Back when I started, people weren't as open to the idea of cosplay so it really took a lot of courage to go to a public venue and standing out.

Kat Langomez as Miku Hatsune during Shizen Orchestra

My best experience was during Shizen Orchestra. Apart from it being a fun convention it was memorable because I had won first place for my Miku Hatsune cosplay. And that was even up against mecha cosplayers! Though usually I don't join competitions to win I just use them as a way to show people the "play" part of my cosplay. At that point I had revised my Miku cosplay a lot in order to get it down to the very last detail. It was still a delightful feeling to know your hard work and effort are acknowledged. Oh and we had a really big impromptu conga line with the cosplayers there I think they ended up calling it Doki Doki Train?

When you cosplay please do it with all your passion! You have the biggest source of free information called the internet at your disposal so we have little reason not to do well. There's a lot you can do with hard work and a little bit of ingenuity so be resourceful and creative. Most importantly, don't forget to have fun~!

So what can we expect from our dear Katrina Langumez in the near future?  Well, we are lucky to have her answer and she said that one of her dreams is making live action recreations of scenes from anime she cosplays.  Another she said is perhaps a cosplay music video that accurately captures the feel of the series and character.

"For example I want to cosplay, most if not all, of Miku Hatsune's Game Outfits and sing and dance in a video with the appropriate music. It's a really really ambitious dream and I'm in the planning process to take the first steps towards it! I'm really excited about it so that's something to look forward to," she said smiling.
